Taylor Swift Is the Biggest Cat Fan Ever!

April 8, 2016 by Christina Heiser Leave a Comment

Tay-Tay may be one of the most famous women in the world, but she’s really more like us than you think. The tall blonde is actually a total cat lady. Taylor has two kitties: Olivia Benson and Meredith Gray. Yep, both are named after two of her favorite TV characters, from Law and Order: SVU and Grey’s Anatomy. They’re adorable, aren’t they?

We have to admit, we’re kind of jealous of Olivia and Meredith: They’re definitely living more luxurious lives than we are!

No doubt getting way up close and personal with a lion isn’t high on your bucket list. But these cute cubs (seriously, they’re adorable!) snuggled up with a trainer at the lion park, and we can’t help but feel a little jealous (if only our domesticated cat could be so affectionate, right?). Watch the video to see for yourself:

Can’t you feel the love?

6 Famous Cats We Just Can’t Get Enough of

April 7, 2016 by Christina Heiser Leave a Comment

Move over dogs: Cat are officially man’s best friend. With the rise in popularity of the fluffy creatures (according to the ASPCA, almost 40 percent of homes in the U.S. have cats), it’s no surprise that there are some super-famous kitties out there now. Here, the biggest feline stars of our day:

1. Grumpy Cat

Back in 2012, Grumpy Cat became a household name after a photo of her posted on Reddit went viral, thanks to her seriously angry face. Now, she’s raking in the big bucks by selling merchandise like stuffed animals, calendars, and T-shirts with her memorable mug.

2. Lil Bub

This adorable “perma-kitten” (she has genetic mutations that have dwarfed her from growing) rose to fame in 2012 after her owner created a Tumblr account to share pics of her. Lil Bub’s story was picked up by lots of media outlets, and she even had a documentary (Lil Bub & Friendz)  made about her life story. Impressive stuff for such a tiny cat!

3. Garfield

Okay, we know Garfield doesn’t actually exist, but how could we leave this orange cat off the list? The comic strip by Jim Davis debuted in 1978, ultimately spawning a successful TV sitcom.

4. Hello Kitty

Yep, another cartoon cat. You’d be hard-pressed to find any young girl (or adult woman, for that matter) who isn’t a fan of the pink bow-wearing Hello Kitty, a character under the Sanrio umbrella. According to popcultmag.com, Sanrio rakes in a whopping $1 BILLION a year, and half of that comes from Hello Kitty stuff.

5. Maru

We kid you not: This Japanese cat’s YouTube videos have more than 21 million views. The reason? Maru, a male Scottish fold, is quite striking to look at.

6. Hamilton the Hipster Cat

This gray and white cat has a “mustache” that makes him look like he’d fit in perfectly in Brooklyn. Oh yeah, and he’s kind of a social media genius: He has 464,000 Instagram followers.

Is Your Cat on a Diet? Don’t Worry, She Still Loves You!

April 5, 2016 by Christina Heiser Leave a Comment

You know how your kitty becomes your BFF when she’s hungry? Well, if you’re worried that your cat will start to hate you if you decide to put her on a diet, don’t fret. A recent study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior has found that felines won’t hold it against you if you restrict their calories for weight loss.

The researchers thought that the reason many pet owners are hesitant to put their cats on diets if they’re overweight is that the cats would develop annoying behaviors (like begging for food all the time) and ultimately become less affectionate. However, the 47 cats in the study, who were all classified as obese, were all still total love babies after being fed less (a.k.a. they still purred a ton). So, if your cat needs to shed a few pounds, you don’t have to be concerned that she won’t cuddle in your lap anymore if you put her on a diet.

Your Cat Could Be Making You Go Crazy. Literally.

April 5, 2016 by Christina Heiser Leave a Comment

Do you have road rage anytime you get behind the wheel? Well, it could be all Fluffy’s fault. What’s the connection, you ask? It turns out your anger could be the result of being infected with the toxoplasmosis parasite, sometimes found in cat poop. Yep, we’re serious.

In a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, researchers examined more than 350 adults with something called Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) and found that they were twice as likely to be exposed to the parasite than those without a psychiatric diagnosis. Whoa. It’s worth pointing out though, that while the researchers found an association between toxoplasmosis and IED, they couldn’t prove that toxoplasmosis actually caused someone to get all rage-y.

Still, lots of people are exposed to this parasite (according to the CDC, about 20 percent of the population in the U.S. has been infected!). Cats shed the parasite when they go number two, and humans are generally infected after cleaning their pet’s litter box and not washing their hands after. The moral of the story: Always suds up after scooping out your kitty’s poop. It’s not only hygienic, it may save you some unnecessary anger.
