Why Are Cats Smoking Pot?

October 13, 2016 by Christina Heiser Leave a Comment

Medical marijuana has been shown to help ease the pain of various ailments, and it may be effective for sick cats, too. According to a new article in The New York Times, people have turned to pot to treat their pets’ ailments. For example, one woman’s cat, Little Kitty, has arthritis. Its owner got a medical marijuana card and now uses edible cannabis oil made specifically for cats. Little Kitty is now back to her old self. (And no, the cats who use marijuana don’t get high!) However, keep in mind that this treatment hasn’t actually been approved by regulators. Still, if it can give your feline relief, it might be worth considering.

Should You Be Worried About Cat Scratch Fever?

September 28, 2016 by Christina Heiser Leave a Comment

You love playing with your cat, but there’s always the chance that she’ll scratch you from time to time. It happens. But, could that scratch cause you health issues? According to CBS News, the Centers for Disease Control recently released a report that showed that 12,000 people are diagnosed with cat scratch fever every year in the U.S. If not treated, cat scratch fever can lead to two conditions that are deadly.

Apparently, 35 percent of cats have the bacteria that causes cat scratch fever, children are among the highest at risk for getting sick. The best thing you can do is wash your hands regularly to remove bacteria. If you do get bitten or scratched, keep your eye on the area. If it becomes red or inflamed, contact your doc, as the condition can be treated with antibiotics.

Why You Should Make Your Cat Work to Eat

September 13, 2016 by Christina Heiser Leave a Comment

Whether or not your cat spends all her time indoors or outdoors, one thing remains true: She loves to hunt. In fact, per an article on nymag.com, a new study finds that indoor kitties still have that killer hunting instinct.

That’s why the study authors suggest using a puzzle feeder come dinnertime. With a puzzle feeder, cats have to use their paws “solve” getting to the food, and this engages their desire to hunt. According to nymag.com, vets also report that puzzle feeders help cats become less aggressive and fearful. So what are you waiting for? Try this one from Catit!
