The Language of Cat Tails

March 25, 2022 by Jemile Nesimi-Hobson Leave a Comment

Cats aren’t limited to just purring or meowing to communicate – body language is also a huge part of expressing their emotions and mood. Understanding cat tail language can help you understand your cat better and meet their needs. Here are the two ways your cat communicates with its tails – movement and position.

Cat tail movement and what it means

Unlike dogs, cats do not only wag their tails when they are happy. There are other reasons for cat tail movement or wagging.

Flicking or thrashing tail

This means your cat is agitated, aggressive, angry, or feeling threatened.

Gentle swishing

Your cat feels playful and maybe in a mood to pounce.

Quivering tail

This means your cat is excited to see you or another cat.

Low twitching

Your cat may feel irritated or annoyed.

Tail wagging while sleeping

Your cat is most likely dreaming.

Some cats may experience involuntary twitching or tail twitch. The other reason a cat may tail twitch is an extremely rare condition known as feline hyperesthesia syndrome or twitch-skin syndrome.

The Language of Cat Tails

What your cat’s tail position means

Wrapping tail around you

Like when we hug as humans, cats may wrap their tails around us as a friendly greeting and willingness to interact or bond with them.

Tail high up in the air

Your cat is feeling friendly and confident.

Curved like a question mark

An invitation to interact or your cat is focused on an object of interest.

Straight down

Your cat is feeling agitated and aggressive; it is best not to try to pet or engage but instead try to neutralize why your cat feels upset.

A puffy tail that is lashing from side to side and arched back

Your cat is probably scared, angry, or agitated. It is best to leave your cat alone.

Tucked tail

Your cat is nervous or submissive. Better to wait for your cat to come to you and be low-key with attention.

The Man Who Loved Cats So Much That He Changed How We Look at Them

March 17, 2022 by Jemile Nesimi-Hobson Leave a Comment

Recently a movie called, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, hit theaters and was immediately gained attention because it will love.  Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, as the main character Louis Wain, an artist that lived between 1860 – 1939.

Who was Louis Wain?

Louis Wain was an artist from England, that was well-known for his animated and anthropomorphized cats.  When he was 20  years old, his father passed away and he needed to become the man of the house and support his mother and five sisters through his work as an illustrator for London newspapers.  He married Emily Richardson in 1883 but became widowed five years later when Emily died of breast cancer.  Before Emily died, they had found a kitten that they named Peter and Louis often drew Peter to entertain Emily when she was sick.

Emily was delighted with the drawings and encouraged Louis to publish them.  So Louis did just that and his drawings became quite popular.  He eventually illustrated 200 books with cat art.

How we look at cats

Prior to Louis Wain’s cat art becoming popular, cats were viewed differently by society.  Victorians mostly were good mouse catchers, however, the popularity of Wain’s cats changed people’s view as lovable, smart, and portrayed them as more “human”.  H.G. Wells is quoted as saying of Louis in 1925, “He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. British cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves.”

Wain’s final years

Unfortunately, while Louis was able to change how people viewed cats and create so much cat art, his personal life became sadder as each year passed.  A couple of his sisters passed away and he became paranoid, delusional, and obsessed with strange activities including hourly changing furniture in their home or claiming that his sister was plotting to kill him. By 1924, his family had no choice but to have him certified insane and committed to a ward in the Hospital.  He continued drawing cats and found great pleasure in this even as he himself was in constant inner distress.
