Have you ever noticed your cat “kneading” with its paws? It sort of looks like they are about to make biscuits with this prevalent cat behavior.
What is cat kneading?
You may notice your cat making this rhythmic motion called kneading. Usually, they do this on something soft such as their bed, a pillow, the coach, a blanket, or perhaps your lap? Cat kneading is not something every cat does, but the ones that do create a pushing motion with their paws.
Why does my cat knead?
It isn’t known why cats knead, but there are some ideas as to why:
- Kneading is something that kittens do to stimulate the mama cat’s milk while nursing– it is believed that perhaps they continue into adulthood when they feel safe and nurtured.
- They are just doing it to stretch
- It may be a form of affection towards you
- It could be territorial
- Wild cats knead before they lay down in the grass as an ancient behavior. Cats may continue to do so as an instinctual ingrained behavior
