Cat cafes are super popular in Japan (many people in apartments there aren’t allowed to own cats), and they’ve been popping up across the globe in the last couple of years. It makes sense that so many people love the concept: Schedule time to play with some cute kitties (for a fee) while sipping on a cup of coffee or enjoying a cookie? Sign us up. Here’s a rundown of all the cat cafes in the U.S., in case you need a little vacation inspiration.
1. Meow Parlour: New York City
The first permanent cat cafe in the U.S., Meow Parlour opened back in 2014. They serve yummy macarons (the bakery is in a separate location from where the cats are), and all of the kitties are up for adoption.
2. Koneko: New York City
This one was inspired by those in Japan. Koneko even means kitten in Japanese!
3. Little Lions: New York City
At Little Lions, you can sign up for various activities they offer, like movie night, story time, and yoga.
4. Cat Town Cafe: Oakland, California
Cat Town is a non-profit organization that has rescued more than a thousand cats since it first launched in 2011. In 2014, they decided to open a cafe to help get even more furballs adopted.
5. KitTea: San Francisco
Need a regular fix? For a limited time, KitTea is offering one-year membership plans: For $200, you get one 1-hour visit a month without having to make reservations, a 10 percent discount on food and certain merchandise, and a complimentary pot of tea. There’s also an $800 membership, which gives you one 1-hour session a week.
6. The Green Cat Rescue Cafe: San Francisco
The owners of this cat cafe aim to educate the public about cat behavior through community events and support local cat rescue agencies.
7. Catfe: Los Angeles
LA’s only cat cafe serves fun cat-themed treats, like a catnip tea.
8. The Cat Cafe: San Diego
The Cat Cafe serves delicious espresso drinks, in addition to having cats from rescue organizations available for adoption.
9. Seattle Meowtropolitan: Seattle
Seattle is pretty much the coffee capital, so it makes sense to pair java with cute animals, right?
10. Purrington’s Cat Lounge: Portland
At Portland’s only cat cafe, they even have wine tasting events. Just don’t let that kitty have a sip!
11. Planet Tails: Naples, Florida
Naples is a popular summer location, and many rentals have no pet policies. So, it was pretty genius for the owner of Planet Tails to open a cat cafe there.
12. Gatos y Galletas: Albuquerque
New Mexico’s first cat cafe isn’t open yet but should be soon. Check their Facebook page for updates!
13. Denver Cat Company: Denver
One of the most fun events taking place at Denver Cat Company is a cat-themed painting class.
